Imagine loading your kids into the car a cold winter morning to drop them off at school on your way to work. You turn the ignition switch to start and the engine refuses to go. A quick look under the hood reveals the problem: the battery posts and terminals are buried in white greenish powder. That’s corrosion buildup due to lack of maintenance. Fortunately, these and other common no-start car problems can be avoided following these five simple battery maintenance tips.
Getting an oil change is not generally a pleasant experience. Having it done for you may save a little mess, but you still have to wait in line and then wait on service. Doing it yourself means contending with used oil.
Although performing your own auto repair can save you quite a bit of money, it can also be extremely dangerous if you do not know what you are doing! Please read on for some very important auto repair tips that you should always follow to avoid the dangers of repairing your own vehicle. Many of these tips are basic common sense strategies but, unfortunately, many people still do not follow them.
The first tip I can offer you is probably the most important and often the most overlooked. Never attempt anything that you feel may be above your ability! If you are even the slightest bit unsure about a repair you are planning to perform, please do yourself a huge favor and contact a professional. While paying someone to do a particular repair for you can be much more expensive, it is also much safer. Most new vehicles are very complex nowadays. Even if you do not only seriously injure yourself, you can wind up making matters worse if you attempt a repair that you are not comfortable with. Being honest with yourself when trying to determine your abilities can save you monstrous headaches!
You should also know what your physical limits are before attempting some more involved auto repairs. For example, do you really believe that you can remove the engine block by yourself? You can’t and there is probably a little voice in the back of your head that is telling you as much. Listen to it! Plan ahead when preparing. Knowing what is involved at every step of the way ahead of time will ensure that you don’t put yourself in precarious situations. I recommend always having a friend assist you regardless of what type of auto repair you are attempting.
Now that you’ve planned ahead and you realistically understand what your limits are, you can get started. However, be sure to retain your focus throughout whatever auto repairs you are performing. Do not let your mind wander. Failing to focus will almost certainly cause you to make mistakes, some of them big ones. Big mistakes in the auto repair field are usually costly ones so pay attention!
There are also a few critical precautions that you must take when performing even the smallest auto repair tasks. The first one is really a no-brainer but I’ve seen people do it. Never smoke while you are near any type of fuel components. I think the reason is pretty self explanatory. I hope you do as well. A slightly related tip is to always have a fire extinguisher on hand. The fire extinguisher you choose should have a B & C rating. This means it can extinguish liquid, grease, and electrical fires. Vehicle support is crucial. Never trust only a jack to support a vehicle you will be crawling under. People are killed every year by cars that have fallen off of jacks. You should always use proper support stands that are rated to support the weight of your particular vehicle. Bricks and such are not a good substitute for a good set of vehicle stands or ramps so you should never use them as such.
There you have it friends. I hope you follow all of the solid advice I’ve given in this article. It really could save your life!
If you own a brand spanking new car, consider yourself lucky. However, as your beautiful car begins to age, you may need to start paying a bit more attention to its lovely interior. As the years go by, items such as the carpets, trim, seat covers, and dashboard will require repair or flat out replacement. It is much easier to perform these potentially expensive interior repairs sooner rather than later.
If you plan on performing any type of extensive interior auto repair, you should begin with the dashboard. It is the largest and probably most intricate item inside your vehicle. Dashboard repair, more often than not, usually involves no more than a simply paint job and maybe some minor crack repair. Before repairing your dashboard, remove and clean all removable parts. Your cleaning solution should be nothing more elaborate than dish soap and warm water. After you’ve cleaned the smaller parts, you should move on to the other interior components such as the steering wheel and such. A soft cloth works best for these items. Afterward, you should cover all items and rub the plastic parts of your dashboard with a quality fine grade sandpaper and then prime. Once the primer dries, apply a good coat of quality paint that was designed for your car. If there is serious damage to the dashboard, you may be better off purchasing a vinyl repair kit or a matching dash cover.
Once you’ve completed the dash repair, take a look above you. A loose or dangling headliner is irritating at best. Although older style fabric headliners were easy to repair, newer ones can be difficult and expensive if not repaired quickly. In some cases, headliner repair may be best left to professionals. Your best bet is to see what headliner replacement kids are available for your particular vehicle. If you think you are up to the challenge, go for it! It’s usually much less expensive than hiring a pro to do it for you!
The most overlooked of the interior components of your car are probably the carpets. Faded and torn carpets make your car look just terrible inside. Replacing the entire carpet is usually the best option since it provides a uniform look throughout the vehicle and is not all that difficult to do yourself with the help of a friend. Most auto supply stores can order replacement carpets that are specific to your vehicle, meaning they will fit it perfectly! If you are lucky, the old carpet will not have been pasted down. If that’s the case, pulling it up and installing the new carpet is a snap. However, tearing up a pasted carpet can take some time so be patient and be sure to clean up after you’ve removed it so the new carpet lays flat.
As you can see, interior auto repair does not always require the services of a professional. Interior auto repair can be a nice do it yourself project for those that enjoy exerting a bit of elbow grease. If you enjoy auto repair or simply just want to save some money, give it a shot!
