Default The downside of wearing glasses

I don't know if you've ever thought about it, but airbags. Here you are, something happens, and the airbag deploys at 200mph, directly into your face. What happens when you're wearing glasses? It seems to me that they would shatter and end up in your eyes, wouldn't they?

It isn't the glasses, really, that I dislike in this scenario. It's the airbags. They claim that airbags save lives, but there have been many incidences where they took lives. I think they should be *OPTIONAL* and never mandatory.

Ohhh, can of worms there.....

Glasses today are rarely made from glass: it's too heavy compared to modern materials, and can't be done as 'precise'.

An airbag to the face is like a punch to the head, and while that causes injury, it's nothing like hitting the steering wheel with your face, nor is it fatal as frequently.

My folks were in a serious collision, my father was wearing glasses.... he had black eyes and a cut on his nose, a nasty bruise from the seatbelt; my mother was just bruised badly. A brand new Mazda was written off at the scene: they walked away.

Statistically, they're a good thing .... and I didn't know know that safety should be 'optional'.

I know someone who was in the same situation as Doll's father but without glasses and she came out of it fine, well as best she could that is. Her entire chest area was bruised up too (the bag helps to deter the rush of her towards the wheel but she still tapped at it). I would much rather be bruised than dead.

Safety should be up to the person, IMO. Legislating "safety" to the consumer is something like legislating morality. For every person "saved" by a seatbelt, someone can name someone who was saved by NOT having one on. If people want to be stupid, that should be their own decision. *I* would still wear seatbelts, but I would choose not to have airbags. They have been proven to be dangerous to people below a certain height. I know adults smaller than that height. Should they be relegated to the back seat because of their height? Why not just allow consumers to decide if they want airbags or not?

You can have the airbags in any vehicle deactivated by a mechanic, it's not hard to do and shouldn't cost a lot.

Why manufacturers don't share that tidbit: because it's a liability issue that could land 'em in court.

You actually DO have a choice where airbags are concerned, but that option is literally going to cost you, after-market.

I respect your view, so I'm arming you to act on it.
