I'm thinking about giving a car to my brother, who doesn't have a car right now. I've heard that the license branch uses blue book value for sales tax when a car is given away, and that money can be saved by charging a small price. Does anyone know if that's true?

Someone gave me a car once and the blue book value was used to determine the sales tax. It ended up costing me more than buying the car for $50.00 or $75.00, but was still less than paying for the car and the sales tax. It was an older car.

I've never given a car away, so let me get this straight. Where does the sales tax go? Who charges it and where does it go to if the car is a gift? And why can they take away our right to gift an old car?

Those are good questions, MyMotor. I could have gotten a time when I paid less than blue book mixed up with a time I got a car free in that last post, or been thinking about another type of taxes, though I don't know what they would be. It's also possible that you have to have a special form to avoid paying sales tax on a gifted car. Does anyone know for sure how that works?
