What is the longest time that you, or someone you directly knew, has kept their car and kept it in good running condition? I've had mine for 12 years now and it has 239,000 miles on it.

I had a car that had 254,000 miles on it before it was not salvageable any more. But this is the first time I have bought a vehicle with less than 100,000 on it, and it is sitting at 99,000 (now I've put 500 on it).

Yeah,it's kind of hard to keep a car up when you buy it after that many miles. You don't know the exact maintenance history on it.

I normally keep mine for 3 or 4 years, hardly do heavy mileage in it, as I tend to work from home or I work close to home as possible so it's easy walking distance.

My grandmother bought a new 1989 Trans Am (in that year, obviously) and she's had it all this time. It still runs very well but doesn't have that many miles on it. I still think it's impressive because she's not really a car person.

I'm envious of people who can keep a car for 20 years and only rack up 40,000 or so miles on it. I don't see how they can do it.
