Default Maps

In this time and age, most everybody knows or has a GPS system. Do you still use maps? Do you think they are obsolete?

I still have a box full of maps. I love trying to figure out how to get from point A to point B the fastest or more efficient way. I think that kids are being short changed. Reading a map is an important skill, and a lot of them are just used to the lady that tells mommy or daddy to turn right or turn left.

I keep a road atlas in my car's trunk just in case something goes wrong with my GPS system. I don't think I've opened it since the day that I bought it.

I don't use GPS. I still just don't trust it. The other day there was a news report of a woman using her GPS late at night in a town; she was a visitor there and the GPS had her suddenly make a turn, but when she did she found out she was on train tracks with a train coming her way. Luckily for her she was able to jump out of the car before the train killed her. Her car was all messed up.

I don't like to use traditional maps, but I will look up directions online and print them out. I will also study the map online that shows the route I would be taking before heading out the door so that I have some sort of visual in my head instead of just directions. Sometimes the directions I get are much longer than need be which is why I study the map online to make sure it is the best route.

I like to use maps. That way I can learn an area and where one place is relative to other places in the area. I've never been able to get used to a digital clock either.

GPS units are not intended to be used that way, though. There is common sense necessary in using a GPS just like in using a map. If there isn't a road there, don't turn!

I love maps and still use them. However, I also have a GPS. When using a GPS you need to have a good sense of direction as well as a general idea of where you are going. My daughters love that I fight with the directions lady. She usually tries to send me where I don't want to go, so she is always recalculating. I pretty much know where I want to go. I use it mainly for finding the number and when I am not familiar to the specific place. There are places with lots of one way streets that are tricky and it is in those places that I use my GPS the most.
