Default Mountain driving guidelines?

I'm pretty new to driving in the mountains. What is the best way to use my gears going up and going down steep mountain grades? Any practices to avoid?

The only thing to remember is DON'T RIDE YOUR BRAKE. I had a friend who was coming down a mountain behind us one time and we had to stop at the bottom until their brakes *fire* went out. Yeah. So, don't do that!
