Default SUV is more safe than a car...?

My one friend wants to get his first vehicle. His mom drives a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee & his dad drives a 2005 Chevy Equinox. They refuse to get him a car, because they say they are completely and totally unsafe. I think he might be getting a Chevy Trailblazer...not sure though. All he wants is a car.

So it got me thinking, is a SUV/Crossover really safer than say your typical car?

Really depends in my opinion. I can see valid points on both sides. But I think it comes down to the individual model. I will admit though, I like to sit higher when I drive.

I guess all cars have safety protections meaning all cars are safe to drive. Accidents are commonly caused by careless drivers on the road. I used to drive SUV car. I can say that it's safer to drive it because of the metals around the car. It helps to protect the driver in case of accidents.

I concur with joyrider. I believe that SUVs have been generally built to withstand much "abuse" from the ones that sit behind the wheel. No sedan can go on offroads and come out at the end "uninjured." LOL

For my child's first car I would probably give her a truck with custom impact-absorbing grills all-around the car so that if she gets hit from any side, it will be the truck that will get most of the damage and not the passenger.

And I do not think she will drive something like that. LOL.

I currently drive a Chevy Blazer and I have to say in an accident I feel safer in that then I would in a car. I was at the gas station waiting in line and got hit from behind by someone pulling in way too fast. The impact was so hard that my truck actually moved about a foot. However it did minimal damage to the bumper and tailgate. The same accident in a car would probably have totaled it.

The drawback of an SUV is that it isn't very aerodynamic. If it gets too windy out, it blows around like crazy. This can be disconcerting at times especially to a new driver who isn't used to it.
