Default Texting or talking while driving

I don't know about you, but people who text or talk on their cell while driving, especially on the freeway, really amaze me - the wrong way. I can't do it without the risk of losing concentration, and I'm never prepared to take that risk. Yet, too many people are still doing it, despite the fact that it's illegal. What gives?

It's because everyone tends to think, "*I* won't have a problem. *I* can handle it. I won't be so distracted that I'll get in a wreck." At least until they do end up in a wreck.

It's illegal in Canada now to text and drive, or be on a cellular device that ISN'T hands-free.

The fines for getting caught are in the vicinity of $200, I'm told.

It is illegal to text here in NY while driving. It's also illegal to talk when driving unless you use a hands free device. Heck it's too hard to do either, I lose my concentration when I'm trying to do something other than drive.

Despite the law, people do it here all the time too. It freaks me out-really worries me, and I try to keep as far away from cars with drivers obviously doing this as I can.

I have actually caught myself doing it, and I have since refrained from doing so. It's simply tempting. There's this urge inside you to maintain a seamless connection with people even while you're driving. Hands free systems and Wifi on board cars should address that. But it would take time before everyone would embrace these technologies in their own cars.

I've done it once, but I was stuck in stationary traffic at the time, and remained stuck for another fifteen minutes. I had the engine turned off, it was a huge time waster.

I talk on my cell phone while driving but I have a hands free device. If traffic gets too thick then I tell the person I'll call them back and I NEVER text while driving.

Getting stuck in traffic is a cool chance to talk to people, get the boredom out by chatting or leaving instructions in the office or saying Hi to someone. These kinds of conversations can easily be cut when traffic moves again. But I have a friend who discusses details of a project with his subordinate while driving. When I went with him once, I told him to pull over and move to the passenger seat while I volunteered to drive.

Talking on the cellphone when driving is already bad, let alone texting messages. People just don't think. I think both are so bad as driving after you drink.
