Default Traffic?

I wonder why the amount of page views (or visitors) to your website is called traffic. Is there such thing as "traffic jam" in the "virtual streets"? Is it as bad as the real traffic jam? How would you deal with it as a web owner (if you were).

Yeah, you can get a traffic jam if people are visiting at peak times, or else if you run out of bandwidth. Not much you can do other than upgrading your package.

A traffic jam on the internet would be something like a denial of service attack (that's when someone sends so much traffic at once that the site can't handle it).
