I was quite interested in getting involved in this market, as a purchaser, until I read all the downers about scammers and con men. Is it a risk anyhow, regardless of the net safety issues?

Oh, I'd say that market is a big risk no matter how you cut. I could be wrong, but I personally have not heard many good things about that market.

That's a pity as there are some nice looking cars out there. Perhaps it is better to stick to live time auctions where you can see what you are getting. Not sure how many of those have classic cars though.

There are scammers and con men everywhere these days. Don't give up on it just make sure to learn everything you can to protect yourself.
