I think the legality of driving with a cracked windshield varies by state. I was in my car and the temperature outside was below freezing, and my windshield was fogged up. I had the car warmed up already, and flipped on the defrost - and the windshield cracked when the hot air hit it. Bad deal!
Oh no! I know here in NY you won't pass inspection if the crack is anywhere the wiper touches when the wipers are on. I'm not sure where you live and what the rules are.
If the crack is not too bad you may be able to get the windshield repaired rather than spending money for a replacement. But don't wait too long or it may get to the point where it can't be fixed.
I have always heard it was possible for that to happen but I have never known anyone it actually happened to. I remember when we lived in Michigan it was illegal there but from what I hear most states (where its not illegal) a cop will still ticket you for it.
Even if it is legal, don't you think it's pretty dangerous. What if something happened and you were driving and is some how shattered or just flew back in your face? You don't want that to happen. I didn't even know it could break doing what you explained. I grew up in the north and never saw that before.
