Default Do you like laws restricting what drivers can do while driving?

I don't really like the laws that say you can't talk on a cell phone or text while driving. There will always be distractions in a car, but some people handle them differently than others. If you can't talk on a cell phone, I don't think you should be allowed to eat. How about music? There are so many things that might take your hands off the wheel, and your attention off the road. Where do you think the line should be drawn?

I think cell phone should be not allowed. You are not focused because #1 you are talking on a phone and #2 you are actually holding the device to your ear and one hand is off the car. I think that eating is OK and music though because those are just 1 distrcation.

HANG, but what if one is eating WHILE listening to music? LOL I definitely am against TEXTING while driving, because your whole attention is on the phone, but talking is not much different from talking to someone sitting in the car with you.

I have talked on the phone while driving a couple of times, but never texted while driving. I think texting while driving takes up to much concentration. I have texted while sitting at a red light and even then sometimes I can't pay attention to when the light changes.

I'm in between on this. I do talk and text once in a while, but it's funny when half the cars are talking on their cell phones at 7:30am when I'm on my way to work. Can't people just leave others alone and stop calling them so early. I've been cut off too many times by people on their cell phones or texting. I get so mad when it happens too. If they have a law for it where I live, I would be shocked, but in favor of it. I'm one that doesn't need to talk to someone thats not where I am every second of the day. I remember when cell phones were mainly for people who are in business. That was a long time ago.

As far as texting goes, I'm similar to Smooth, I only text at red lights. If you know your neighborhood, you probably have a good idea as to the timing of the light changes, so I don't find it very difficult. I also think MaximumSpeed brings up a good point. I don't see why eating and listening to music is worse than talking on a cell phone. At least you can keep your eyes completely on the road when you're on the phone. That's much harder to do while eating certain foods.

You are driving, you should be driving. Unless some random serial killer is chasing you down in a high speed pursuit there is no other reason to be on the phone. It is not an emergency, it is not life threatening - if it is, pull over.

I like the laws that say what people can and can not do while driving. Since it seems that many people are too selfish, stupid or just plain ignorant to do it for themselves I think the government needs to do it.

Can't you make a similar argument with regard to eating? If you're not diabetic or something, then you don't need to eat while driving. Or as you said, if you must take your attention away from the road, then you should pull over. I get your point, I just don't understand why the law makes cops ticket one distraction over another. I would have much less of a problem if the law said you can't do anything other than operate your vehicle while driving. Then at least we would all have to suffer fairly.

I think that it is ok to use a hands free phone when driving. When you actually are holding that phone up to the ear, it really hurts your driving ability. That is my view at least.
