I am getting ready to take a trip up north. I live in Florida, and have for most of my adult life. I am really afraid of the fact that I will probably be driving in snow. I've never done this, and I'm afraid! Does anyone have any tips on what to do to avoid skidding?
What kind of car do you have and what type of tires are on it? It might be easier to use a rental that is prepared for the handling of driving in snow (and maybe some ice too).
It really isn't that difficult to drive in the snow. It just takes some common sense and careful driving. As long as you are driving at a speed appropriate for road conditions you should be fine.
Snow is easy to drive in, it's the ice that is the problem. Be sure you have good winter tires on the car. Drive slow enough to be comfortable and pay attention to the other drivers.

I think that might be a good idea! I have a small Huyndai Accent. I think it will probably slip and slide too much. Maybe a rental would be better.
Take it slow and easy. Don't panic when you start to slip and slide because you will, at some point, when you drive on snow or ice. Take your foot off the gas if you feel like you are losing control and brake steadily. Avoid trying to drive through any build-up of snow. Your car will have a mind of its own if you do. If you do get a rental, try to get a 4 wheel drive. That will eliminate 99% of your problems.
Driving in the snow isn't all that terrible, but if you are up there with family, you can always have someone else drive you. Anyone who lives up there will have experience.
Snow isn't all that bad. It's the ice you have to worry about! Also, the east coast really hasn't seen much snow at all this winter. You might get lucky, and not even have to deal with it!
It isn't, until you get used to it. I remember our drivers ed teacher would take us out year round but not until you hit a search age. Guess who has a birthday in the winter months? his lady and my first experience in snow on a fun hill was with a teacher who was glaring down on me.
There is no snow up here so you will be fine. The advice I would give to you though would be to make sure you have excellent snow tires on the car. With a good set of tires you can drive anywhere.
