Default Falling apart

My truck is almost 10 years old and besides a full brake system replacement 6 years ago nothing too major has gone wrong. Now I need both new shocks, which are going to cost $400 and a new muffler, which I haven't priced yet. I am just glad it isn't anything worse.

Yes, it could be much worse. You have probably been performing proper routine maintenance, which prevents major damage from happening. Something as simple as keeping up with the oil changes can keep your car running smoothly!

I agree Alexus - proper maintenance is the key to a smooth running vehicle. Some cars are just lemons though!

Do you just need the muffler or the whole exhaust system? That could be costly (whole system).

HotRod, I am hoping it is just the muffler and not the whole exhaust system. I have to get it into the shop and get it checked out.

Also, be glad you didn't have to replace the catalytic converter. That can also be an expensive repair. Have you really not need to replace your brakes in 6 years? That's really good! I am hell on brakes!

I'm hell on brakes too! I had to change my rotors a few times with my old car. Well I hope it's not the whole exhaust system - that includes the catalytic converter and yes that is pricey. I had to have a total haul done on an old car once. I about crapped when they told me what it was going to cost me.

10 years without much work needed is really good. My father-in-law has a truck that's almost 25 years old, but he's taken care of it and it still runs great.

That sounds a lot like my car. It's almost 10 years old, low mileage and mainly highway driving. We've had to do very little to it as we've made a point to maintain it. Good luck on the repairs.

Wow. Nobody else I know (other than my brother) has had a car that long. Most of them get different cars every two or three years!

PEZluvr, I have only had my truck since 2005, but it is a 2002. I spent over $700 6 years ago because one of my calipers went out and punched a hole in the master cylinder. I have put pads on once since then but that is not a big expense since my dad does the labor.
