Default Fuel Efficiency Dropped

I have a 2000 Ford Focus, that has suddenly dropped in fuel efficiency-I've lost 15mpg. I'm quite fond of tinkering, and would like to try and improve this before I put her into a shop.

What kind of things on an older car tends to cost efficiency?

15mpg is a pretty big drop. You have to make sure you are doing regular maintenance on your vehicle. Your usual oil change, check fluids and replace if needed, replace fuel filter and oil filters, check brakes, checking tire pressure and don't forget to slow it down a bit. If you speed allot, you are going to use up more fuel.

Speeding isn't a problem, I don't drive with a lead boot. Quite the opposite. I'm a very conservative city driver, and I've been told that all the gentle city driving is likely to be causing deposits in the injectors.

She's in for service on Tuesday, and I'm taking her for a long hard run with a fuel treatment in the engine after that.

A service, if well done, should help a lot. Oil, fuel and air filters can cause problems, and if there is a temperature sensor malfunctioning in the engine control unit, it might be running rich. Ask at the service for them to look out for things that might be costing fuel, you might be able to sort it out.
