Default Locking Yourself Out

Before they redesigned the locks and door handles on cars, I'd locked myself out so many times that I could get the car unlocked fairly easily. Now, I have to call someone and pay to get back in. What do you do when you lock yourself out?

There have been times when I've been able to get into a vehicle after locking myself out, but you have to have just the right tool. Patience helps, too. Sometimes, it takes a while to get it just right. Otherwise, I call someone and pay them.

I don't remember it has ever happened to me but a friend of mine has a habit of locking herself out. She always calls someone to get back in.

I'm a very forgetful person if my head were not connected to my body I would forget where I had placed it. Having said that, my car is equipped with alarm to remind me that I had forgotten to lock it.

In the old days, getting locked out wasn't a big deal: a coat hanger was all you needed to pop the door locks with. A metal "stick", flat, with a hook cut out of the end of it was called a slim-jim, and AAA's service boys still carry them.

With power door locks, I'm absolutely paranoid. I have a 2-part key ring, and on cold mornings when I need to let my wheels thaw and warm up, the remote for the vehicle is with me, while the keys are in the ignition!

My friend once locked himself out but instead of paying someone he broke the window and had it replaced for £50. I don't know if he did the right thing, though. Maybe it would have cost him more the other way around.
