Default Radars, legal or not?

I have been thinking about getting a radar. However, a friend of mine told me that they are illegal in most states. Is this true? I really would like to have one, but I am not too keen on getting a double ticket for speeding and having a radar.

Yeah, here radar detectors are illegal. When I lived in Maryland they were legal, but I never had one. By the time it beeped you would have most likely already been caught on the cops radar.

I never had one, but I have always wondered how reliable they are. I would really love to have one. I am a very safe driver, but once in a while I am driving fast and would love a call to attention so I don't get a ticket.

In some states, they're legal and in other states, they're not. But I've never been a big fan of radar detectors. I just try to watch my speed and not drive faster than 9 miles over the speed limit. Most cops will cut you a break on that.

Nine? I've heard five over is the upper limit, due to discrepancies in speedometers. Still, it's best to stay at the speed limit or barely under if you want to be honest because, really, even one mile over is breaking the law, technically.

From what I know, they are not illegal because it is your right to know where cops are at all times. I personally think they should be illegal and if they are, then I think that's great because people will speed and put others' lives in danger.

I must agree with Always2gether. I don't understand how it's okay to know where cops are at all times. What's the point in police officers if people can just act right when they know they are around?

"Currently the only state that it is illegal to operate a radar detector is Virginia and Washington D.C."
