Default Snowy Driving on Skinny Roads

Where I live the back roads are narrow and have ditches on the sides instead of shoulders. When it snows, the plow does not clear them down to bare road, so there is always snow cover except for three clear lines where people drive. People going one way use the middle line and one side, people going the other way use the middle line and the other side.

The problem comes when two cars meet each other, since both would love to stay in the clear parts where people have been driving. I always slow down to where I almost stop because I'm afraid of sliding off into the ditch once I'm off the clear parts and onto the snowy parts.

Some people just keep driving at the regular speed and it scares me to death!

Sounds like you are doing the right thing by slowing way down. I will never understand why some folks insist on driving fast in slick conditions! Do they like the thrill or something?

Tabby, we have roads like that where I live. As a matter of face, the road I live on is barely wide enough for two cars to pass, and deep ditches on either side. I'm like you, I'll just about almost stop to let them pass.

I live back a narrow road like that. It has a hill that you have to go up to get out and if you meet another vehicle on the hill, there is no way for either of you to get over far enough to pass, especially when the roads are snowy. We're blessed that there are only two families who live back here and our schedules are totally different.

What do you do when you meet up with each other? Do you have to get a running start to get up and over the hill? Hopefully the snow plows get out to your areas, or else you have a good supply of milk and TP to get you through the winter storms.

So far, we've been lucky and haven't met up. If we do, the only option I know of is for the one driving up the hill to back up. That wouldn't be fun because there's a ditch on one side and a drop-off on the other. The county doesn't do anything to our road because there are only two families who live in the valley.

Yeah, we keep our eye on the weather. When snow is coming in, we go out and get what we need to stay home for a few days. It's a good thing I can work from home.
