Default Stick or Automatic?

If you lived in the suburbs or in the city, which would you prefer to drive: a stick shift car or an automatic car?

I personally would rather drive an automatic because there are so many lights and such. If I lived in the country, then I would pick stick.

I think I could kill the poor engine if I were to drive stick. I tried it a few times, but I just can't do it. I will go for automatic until the day I die, unless a car faerie comes and leaves a stick shift car in the garage.

I've lived in different places then finally bought a house in the mountains. I love driving a stick shift, but in the mountains, especially in winter, an automatic makes more sense.

I've owned and done both, and a stick shift is a royal pain in the neck in (city) rush hour traffic; that smell of a hot clutch is almost unavoidable after a certain point, and it nauseates me.

On the highway, or in snowy conditions, I want a stick shift; once upon a time, my Other Half and I made a deal that one of us would always have a stick shift for wheels, the other could be an automatic: we could swap wheels when needed.

And until last year, that IS the way that it was!

Automatic all the way! Why cause yourself the extra headache especially if you live in the suburbs or city? Automatic just makes life so much easier.

I have had both in almost all types of places to live in, the only bad part is when you have someone with a manual who is not so good at their driving job and ends up rolling back on you at a hill stop light. And yes, it has happened to me before.

Some of the best rides out there don't come equipped with an automatic transmission, which keeps them out of the hands of those not skilled enough to handle them in the first place.

You need to be capable of driving either, in my opinion, or you are lacking in certain skills that I believe all drivers should have.

I LOVE driving a car with a standard transmission! My first car was a standard, and I loved it. We don't currently have a standard, but I would love to get one when we get our next car.

You sound just like my Dad... and well, I happen to agree with you: my first-hand experiences as a passenger lend themselves to that last line of yours, that those unable to drive stick tend to be lacking in certain driving skills.
