Default Strength in the Car Skin

I would assume that the majority of the strength in a car is provided by the frame. How much difference to the strength of a car does the metal panelling make?

Car Talk has an interesting question and answer page regarding this thought. It would appear that it definitely does matter of what material the car is made!
