Default Why is it?

That service stations and repair shops automatically assume women know nothing about cars? I had to take my car in to a service station I won't name. I told them what I needed done and even had the parts with me. All they had to do was install a set of rotors. I dropped my car off and went to work. Several hours later they called and said I had over $2000 worth of work that needed to be done before they could change the rotors. I told them they could put my car back together and I would pick it up and take it somewhere else. I went in and they handed me a 15 page essay on all the things that were supposedly wrong with my car. It has been several months since this encounter and I have had not one of the 'problems' they noticed fixed and surprisingly I have not had any trouble with any of them either. Why do service techs feel the need to fleece women this way?

I can't say I completely understand where you are coming from, as I am not a woman. However, I think the general stereotype is that most women know nothing about cars. This of course isn't always true.

In my experience it is rarely ever true. Most of my women friends know their way around a car better than a lot of men. On the other hand I know quite a few men who don't know a piston from a serpentine belt!

Default I am a woman

I am a woman and I feel the same way. I do have a fantastic set of people who work on my car now and treat me with respect. So in the end the other guys lost my business.

We live in a college town so the locals don't get fleeced, the college kids do. It is unfortunate when businesses think they need to do this in order to make money. It certainly puts me off going to those places. Of course my son does most of my work anyway.

I am a man and I know very little about my car. They should know that just because you are a woman doesn't mean you know nothing about your car. It really has nothing to do with gender.

I do a lot of my stuff myself, and my dad used to do a lot of it but he moved too far away to be able to help me anymore. I have since found a garage that I really like and they never seem to try to scam me.

I have dealt with the same issues. I actually took my car out of the car dealership without a inspection sticker on it. It was past inspection and they said I needed new tires. I think not I said. They told me that they would call the police if I left. I called my dad, he said meet me at home. He took my car to another inspection place and they said they were fine.

Mustang that is exactly what I did after receiving the 15 page quote for over $3000 from the first company! Amazingly enough, they didn't find a single thing wrong except what I already knew was wrong.
