I'm sure it comes as no surprise that Auto Trader Magazine's circulation has dropped over the last few years, while it's website gets over 10 million visitors each month. Now it looks like the owners are debating whether to ditch the magazine alltogether and move all advertising and business to the website. What do you think; good idea, or not?

I've seen lots of magazines having this problem, so I'm not surprised. I think they should talk to the companies and businesses who normally advertise with them, and see if they would be interested in still advertising if the magazine went entirely online, and decide from there.

I think the move would be a good one. I know consumer reports is trying to grow their magazine subscription to an online magazine subscription. I think magazines are a thing of the past and this is the way to go.

Yeah; I wonder if they'll still be able to thrive since people wouldn't be paying for the magazine anymore and would be getting online to the site for free. Would they have to charge more for the advertisement space, or perhaps for the listings, or both?

I would say they could charge a small monthly fee for access to their website, since people were paying for the magazine before, but that would probably be the end of the website since there are so many free classified services out there. They could also just create *more* advertising space by using website space intelligently and creating multiple pages.
