Default Automotive group challenges other car dealerships to help Salvation Army

A local car dealership has thrown down the gauntlet — or at least the kettle.
The Salvation Army needs bell ringers for its kettle drive, which started Nov. 19. John Gibson, the Volkswagen-Subaru service manager, is challenging other dealerships to let their employees who are able take one hour to ring a bell.
“It’s 77 hours a week — if they have 100 employees, they should be able to cover it,” he said. “If each employee does one hour, that’s not so much to ask really.”
National Automotive Group in Jacksonville has its employees signed up, he said. The group has participated in the kettle drive for the past three years.

I sure hope that dealership isn't requiring it's employees to participate. It's one thing if they volunteer, but quite another if they are required by the employer to do it.

If they are requiring it, I would hope they are paying, otherwise it may be against the law. But it does sound like it is volunteer time.

I do have a slight problem with the Salvation Army though, after I read the refuse a lot of items, including anything Harry Potter. I still check for stuff there sometimes though, but their prices are not the best.

This is being a good "corporate citizen" so to speak. The way it actually works is that companies pay the workers who volunteer as if it's part of their regular job. Anything beyond that is the option of the worker, for as long as it does not jeopardize his/her work.
