Have you heard about some states using beet juice to melt ice on their streets? They were saying these towns were running out of salt, and found that beet juice was just as effective. Seems like it would make an awful mess.
When I first heard of this I was a bit worried as I juice beets for the health benefts! Rest assured that they are mixing it with other things, the lower salt content is kinder to the roads in the long term. I have no idea what color it ends up as though!

Sounds like being they guy driving the plow during all hours of the day in all kinds of hairy weather conditions could have it's benefits as well.....! Nothing like decent job perks!
