It could be that everyone is driving a car that has seen its last legs. I'm driving on one myself and have driven it three times as long as I used to drive one.
I try to never go into savings. I wonder how many of these people buying new cars have had to raid their savings. I have a car fund I'm adding to on a regular basis. When I have enough, I'll allow myself to buy another car. Too many people depend solely on the plastic.
