Default Car of the Year

The Car of the Year this year was awarded to the Chevy Volt. The Ford Explorer won Truck of the Year. I'd love to try driving a Volt. It's an electric car (as one could assume from its name).

The only thing I don't like about this vehicle is the price. I think it's way over priced and the battery cost $10,000 to replace if it goes bad. I don't know about you but I don't have money like that just sitting around.

What amazes me is that Chevrolet has only sold 326 Volts so far (granted it's only been since December), yet there are 50,000 people on the waiting list already! Reading on, 'GM predicts it will sell 10,000 of them in 2011 and between 35,000 and 45,000 in 2012.' It will be interesting to see what the actual figures will be by then.

I'd like to have an electric car - or a hybrid. My friend has a hybrid and he spent all of $17 on gasoline last month - compared to my $300 or so!

What? $10,000 only on battery? It's like buying another car. Why would it cost that much? Well, maybe as they develop more the price will have to go down eventually. But congrats for those cars who won the award.

So they consider the Ford Explorer to be a truck? It must be a truck/SUV category or something. I replaced a Ford Explorer with a Chevy Trailblazer, and the Ford didn't hold a candle to my Trailblazer.

Seriously, ten grand to replace the battery? I could buy a new petrol car for that. That's a horrendous price all told-they'll need to deal with that somewhat if they want sales for the car to take off.

That does look like a nice car, but I would never buy it. I would not want to risk the chance of the battery not working and then have to cough up $10,000! That is just too risky for someone like me who does not make that much money.

I love watching shows like Top Gear both US and UK versions but the Volt. I really did not see that one coming at all, not even by a long shot. I must be getting old or something.

I would love to have an electric car also, I hope it is more reliable and affordable in the future. As far as a hybrid car is concerned, I read somewhere that it is not so green and safe as people think it is.
