I have seen people put dash shields on their dashboards. At first I thought the dash shields were completely unnecessary. It turned out that the dash shield helps the car insulate itself from the heat outside.
I've seen those being used on hot days. At first, I couldn't figure out why they would be used, but they really would help insulate the car from the heat. They would help keep the dash from fading, too.
I've never used one myself. Our summers don't get too hot (only a handful of days over 90 each summer), and my car is plenty full of "stuff". I do keep a few blankets in the car - to cover valuables, for warmth on unexpectedly chilly days, to hide surprises from my boyfriend.
