Default Michigan Secretary of State Approves First Online Basic Driver Improvement Courses

On Friday, December 21, 2010, the Michigan Department of State (SOS) approved the American Safety Council's online basic driver improvement course for its Basic Driver Improvement Program (BDI).
This new program, which begins on December 31st, affords Michigan drivers with their first opportunity to complete an online basic driver improvement course to avoid points as a result of receiving a traffic citation. Drivers also can rest assured that upon appropriate completion of American Safety Council’s SOS approved BDI online course that ticket information will not be sent to insurance companies. Drivers can register for the course at http://www.MichiganSafetyCouncil.com.
"The course is simple and the benefits are great," said Jeff Pairan, executive vice president of the American Safety Council. "Take our 4-hour online course. Learn important defensive driving techniques. Avoid ticket points and ticket information being sent to your insurance company. All eligible drivers need to do is complete the course within 60 days to avoid ticket points and reporting of infractions to their insurance company. Completion reporting and all other administrative requirements are handled directly by the American Safety Council, which electronically reports completion information to the SOS on behalf of our customers!”
The American Safety Council's online defensive driving course provides defensive driving strategies and traffic safety information that are specific to Michigan traffic laws. The course is available entirely online, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and American Safety Council provides U.S.-based telephone, e-mail and chat support for the course 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Drivers are eligible for this new course if they were ticketed on or after December 31, 2010 and the ticket received was for three or fewer points. Only those who are cited for serious traffic violations are ineligible (e.g., careless or negligent driving). Criminal violations, violations while operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle and CDL holders are the only other reasons for program ineligibility.
The American Safety Council offers its online Michigan Basic Driver Improvement course at http://www.MichiganSafetyCouncil.com. ASC and its affiliated organizations offer online traffic and workplace safety training, governmental services and professional continuing education programs, in association with state and federal regulatory agencies and court systems. Learn more at http://www.AmericanSafetyCouncil.com.

It sounds like a great idea. There must be a quiz or something at the end to make sure you have actually read it, and not just clicked through the screens. Do you suppose there's a limit to how many tickets one person can avoid? I'll bet you still have to pay the fine though!

This is absolutely cool. Indeed, with technology available these days, why not? This will enable the authorities to focus their time and energy to serious traffic offenders.
