The government has set fuel efficiency standards that raise the minimum mpg by 30 per cent each year between 2011 and 2016. I think it's about time, don't you? I wonder why they haven't upped it sooner.
I can imagine the amount of research and development needed to achieve this. Are you sure about the 30% each year? What I see is that fuel economy cars may have less horsepower. How much horsepower does one really need anyway?
I saw that item in the news as well. It's 30 percent by 2016. Right now the mandated minimum mpg is 27.3 mpg. By 2016, the minimum is slated to be 35.5 mpg.
I assume this 35.5 mpg is for basic passenger cars. There's no way they'll get SUVs, pickup trucks, etc. to this goal in 5 years. Is there any sort of minimum for other types of vehicles?
Actually they could get SUVs up there too. There are big advances being made with eco engines now, and there's the possibility too of having hybrids that will help to conserve the fuel. I think that this is a wonderful thing.
