Default Stop-Start Technology

This is a column by "Click & Clack, the Tappet brothers" (real names Tom & Ray Magliozzi). They're talking about "stop and start" technology - where stopping turns off the engine, and hitting the gas pedal turns it back on - for standard gas-powered vehicles. I know it would theoretically save gas, but I've heard it takes more gas to start a vehicle, so maybe it wouldn't really save much?

That program seems like it would be good in the correct market. Say you and your spouse share a vehicle and your work schedules are the same four days a week, but the fifth day just doesn't work. It would be nice for that person to have a car readily available on that scheduled day every week. Now how many people need that service, considering larger cities have public transportation? Great idea, but it seems like a tough sell
