Do you know how to drive defensively? It's something that's taught in driving schools and it's very important. Defensive driving classes teach you not how to drive, but how to drive in such a manner as to avoid accident producing situations. I think everyone should take a defensive driving class.

I think everyone should take a defensive driving class. People take a lot of chances that are unnecessary, especially when driving around bikes (motorcycles). Defensive driving classes would hopefully make a difference in the safety practiced on the roads.

The thing that stuck with me the most from my defensive driving class was to "separate the hazards". That means that if you are on a narrow road and a car is coming toward you and it looks like you'll pass each other right beside the lady walking her dog, you should slow down so you can handle these things one at a time.

I drive like anyone around me can do anything at any moment, and I've seen some strange stuff done. Paranoid, maybe, but the only accident I have ever gotten into as a driver was getting rear-ended by someone, which may have been avoided if I looked back, but I was a bit busy avoiding the accident that just happened a few cars ahead of me.

My grandfather taught me to drive. He made me get into the habit of staying attuned to each area around the vehicle and to avoid being fixated on any one point.
