Default Drowsiness in long drives

This is my biggest challenge at this time. Long drives of 2-4 hours make me feel drowsy. I try to awaken myself with loud music, drinking something hot, etc. But I still end up finding a spot to take a nap.

Is this normal? or is something else at work here?

Especially in cold weather, driving with the heater on, music playing, your seat leaning back, and the monotony of a snowy landscape, it's easy to get relaxed and drowsy.

Make sure to crack your windows so there is good ventilation in your car. Try eating something healthy (roast beef sub w/veggies rather than a burger) and listening to talk radio or a book to keep your mind engaged.

This is a subject close to my heart, since my uncle was killed when he fell asleep at the wheel. Never, never, never drive when you are too tired. Stop for breaks. Take a friend along. Roll down the windows. Sing out loud. Get out and walk. Stop at a hotel. Do not drive tired. It is not worth it.

That's good advice, Tabby. I'll admit that I'm guilty of driving and being very sleepy. I usually take a cool, damp cloth with me and wipe my face and neck. It really works to perk you up. I've taken my share of 15 minute naps when driving long distances, which really help, too.

I read that once your body gets tired enough, it will cause you to go to sleep and there isn't anything you can do to stop it. That makes Tabby's advice even more important.

Abba, other people have given you some great advice on ways to stay alert. However, I still recommend you get a health check. You shouldn't be feeling so sleepy all the time in my opinion.

The advices are absolutely useful. Thanks Tabby for your very useful and passionate advice. Yeah, I do drive tired and perhaps that accounts for most of my sleepiness. Another friend (offline) mentioned to me that I should avoid driving after a heavy meal.

Angelinus is also right about health matters. At this time I'm confident about my health, although a regular check up is indeed in order.
