Default Slow Second Gear

I've been driving a friend's Toyota Tacoma on occasion lately, and have noticed that it seems sluggish in second gear. It's almost as if once I put it in second, someone throws a load of sand in the bed of the truck. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Could be any number of things. What is the RPM? The throttle position sensor may need chanced or maybe it needs a new fuel filter. Of course it could be a guide wire and worst case scenario there is an impending transmission problem looming.

I really hope it's not the transmission - that would just be miserable. I'll check the RPM next time I'm driving it. It's due for a little servicing (including fuel filter change) soon, so hopefully that's all it is.
