Default Tire speed ratings

I know that tires have speed ratings. Is there really any benefit to going with tires rated for really high speeds that you will never probably drive at?

I can't see what would be a benefit of purchasing tires with speed ratings well over what you will ever be traveling. I am not an expert on tires, but I believe that the additional cost would not be worth what you will receive out of the tires as far as performance. I would love to hear more about this from anyone who may be an expert on this topic.
