Default Tread Pattern

Different manufacturers use different tread patterns. Does it make a great deal of difference to say, handling in the wet, as to which tread pattern you buy?

Yes, some tread patterns are created with water under the tire in mind. They are patterned in such a way as to allow water to escape. Here's a page that discusses this:
