Default Is it better to buy new or used?

I am pretty sure that you can use almost any part you can get from a junkyard, but at the same time it doesn't hurt to check and see how much it would cost new. Sometimes the new part is not as expensive as you think, and you may be better off buying new. On second thought - I don't know that I would buy used brakes...

Lol, no, used brakes would not be my cup of tea. If a new part is something I simply can't afford at the moment, I definitely call around to junk yards to see if I can get a part used. Otherwise, I just go new so that I have to worry less about replacing it again soon.

For my "project car", i.e., the one I dink around with in the garage, I usually go with used parts if they are available. For my "real car" I tend to be more cautious.

I am not car savvy. I tend to trust the new parts first because I wouldn't really know what I am looking for at a junkyard. At least, I can return it to the store if it doesn't work right.

That is a good point, Lizzie - if you get too many bad parts from a junkyard, you may end up paying more in the long run if you can't use them and can't take them back, either.
