Default Brake problems

My brakes make this loud squeak every time I step on them the first couple of times. The noise goes away after that but it is every day, every time I start the car. Any ideas what could be causing this? The brakes don’t smell hot or stinky.

Maybe the last time they were changed, they didn't get enough grease put in? If it goes away, then it seems like it wouldn't be your brakes going bad, at least.

That is better than my sisters car, she has a VW something or another (kind of looks like a mini van but its a suv type). That has the sensitivity of a teen going through puberty.

If your brake pads were recently changed it's a good bet that who ever installed them put in cheap pads or shoes. I once put in some cheap pads with a lifetime warranty from a well known national auto parts chain and no matter what I did to stop the noise the noise never went away. They squealed like pigs in heat.
I finally bought some premium pads (wagners) that was guaranteed not to squeal, you don't even put any anti squeal grease or add any kind of shims. Best brake pads I ever bought, they cost more but they are guaranteed for life. I bought these brake pads at an Advance Auto Parts store.

They were not recently changed (well about 4 months ago). The squeaking just started though. I'm wondering what the heck is the problem. Almost sounds like they are wet.

It could be that dirt got up between your brake pads and rotors. Dirt gets imbedded into the braking material and you just have to wait until that dirt wears out or falls off the pad. But more likely the anti squeal goo they put on the pads for some reason disipated or not enough of it was installed at time of your brake service.

I would definitely get them checked out because mine did that awhile ago and it was not the brake pads but the caliper going bad. I put it off thinking the brakes were still good, the caliper finally gave out and flew into the master cylinder causing about $700 worth of damage to the brake system.

My breaks squeak a little, but it's not that loud. I wasn't too worried about it, but Skippy's story has made me more concerned. It seems to gradually be getting worse too, so I guess I better get them checked out soon.

Is it your rotors? Maybe they needed to be turned or replaced. Or maybe something like a pebble is caught in there somehow.
