Default Brakes

Ok. 2000 Ford modified wheelchair van. Brakes hiss under the vehicle. The brakes feel a little funny but they stop the car. I was having a stopping problem but the shop said it was the AC compressor. I shut off the AC and it fixed the stopping problem but not the other issues. They told me that Ford vans just do that. Should I be worried?

You have a hissing sound when you stop? Well yeah I would be worried. Why not take it to another shop just to be sure. Brakes are important! I know you know that!

Is this a fluid based system or an air based system? If it is the latter then there must be a leak in the system.

Hi Mustang,

The answer to why not take it to another mechanic? Well, I bought it four weeks ago. Prior to buying it I had it at 2-3 mechanics and paid over $300 to get it checked out. I "knew"what repairs I needed and it wasn't too cost prohibitive to buy.

Post buying, I paid a bunch to fix the loose steering I knew about by a different mechanic. It didn't fix the steering. The fix by another mechanic didn't fix the electrical problem I was told it had but didn't. I had to take it to this mechanic to find out it needed a new alternator. So by this time I've had this vehicle at 5 mechanics. Its a pattern when I have a problem, I go from mechanic to mechanic spending lots of money trying to find the problem. I find it really only gets solved once I go online and figure out the problem and tell a mechanic how to fix it. So I'm doing that now to prevent the same trip o round multiple mechanics.
