Default Car High Tension Wires

I had an old car. When its engine is idling, it sounds like it has asthma or something We checked the spark plugs and they were fine. It turned out that the high tension wire needed to be replaced.

In all the cars I owned in the past, that was the only time I replaced the high tension wire. Should it be replaced periodically? How frequently?
