My clutch shows no signs of slipping. Yet, a noise has started that is worrying me. When I go to pull away in first, especially if there is an uphill incline, it makes a noise as I release the pedal. Any ideas what this could be?
I'd check the gearbox oil for a start, as without other signs of slippage it might be a problem elsewhere. It's also possibly the first symptom, with others yet to come of clutch slippage.
That's what I'm afraid of. I'm also afraid of taking it in for the opinion of a mechanic, to be ripped off by them by them telling me that the whole clutch needs replacing, if it doesn't really.
You said it yourself-get a second opinion. If the car can currently be driven then you have the chance still to take it somewhere else and have them look at it, and listen to the noise it is making.
