Default Corroded battery platform

A car in front of me stalled and I attempted to help him. It was an old car. It turned out that the platform on which his battery rested was made of GI sheet crafted by his mechanic. This platform got corroded. It gave way, thus disconnecting the battery from the engine. Like a typical McGyver person, this guy tied up his battery to something to hold it, then rushed to the nearest shop.

What was wrong there? Was his battery leaking? or was it the platform that was made of the wrong material? I didn't want that to happen to me.
