Default How far would you go with DIY repairs?

How far would you go with DIY repairs on your car for example changing filters, before you'd call in a mechanic to help with more trickier aspects?

While I look around for information on these areas, I would have a mechanic do anything to do with the brakes, major problems with the transmission, and engine rebuilds.

Default Good question

I like to take care of the breaks my self, the oil, spark plugs and other things like that. Anything to do with the transmission or alternator send me to the mechanic.
