I have a Mazda Tribute 2002 and my brakes SOMETIMES FOR NO REASON don't catch - meaning they seem to click, click, click like they are trying to catch but it isn't a smooth action. Yes I do stop but it feels unsettling. I have had them checked at two places (Brake Check and an auto garage) and they say there is nothing wrong with my brakes. I was told that perhaps dirt or sand has gotten lodged in the brakes and the ABS come on. This is still worrying to me as it does not happen all of the time, usually a couple of times per journey, but it feels unsafe and I don't know what to do about it.

Have the Mazda towed to the dealership and have them check the brakes. They may have to keep the vehicle and drive it for several days in order for the problem to occur.

I'm no expert but isn't there a fluid involved with anti lock breaking? Maybe the fluid is low or there is some kind of tube that slips out of place momentarily.
