How important is the function of an oxygen sensor in an Oldsmobile to the fuel distribution throughout the system? And where exactly is it located?

I'm not sure where it's located but it is absolutely necessary for the fuel to burn efficiently. We had an 1988 Olds Delta 88 which ran through oxygen sensors like crazy and it would never run smoothly. It would start OK and then choke and sputter until it stopped. We must have replaced the oxygen sensor four times before we gave up and sold the thing. We sold it about 2 years after we bought it new for much less than what we had in it. But it was a relief just to get rid of the thing.

I had a Buick I did that with and it was fine. But a lot of older Oldsmobile have problems with the fuel system so it might be a bad idea.

Well I found it,and I did the pump test, and the pump is fine. I don't have an electrical tester, so I'm thinking about replacing all the fuel system components one by one until the problem is fixed. The filter should still be good, I replaced it about 6 months ago.
