How often SHOULD a person check their oil? I know some who do it weekly, and others monthly, and still others never. What is the appropriate time period between checks?
I really don't know if anyone needs to be checking oil levels often on a car that gets regular maintenance and has never had a problem with leaking. I would imagine if you want to really stay on top of it checking it once a month would be sufficient.
Again, it depends on the age and condition of the engine. A newer engine can get by with once a month checking. An older one? I'd check it every week, just to be sure. It only takes a minute and it's better than running dry going down the road.
Thanks! When I was a teenager, I had a car that apparently had a leak and I never remembered to check it and I know I ran it dry at least once. It isn't something I want to do again, but I don't want to be anal about checking either!
