Default Synthetic versus non-synthetic oils

I had a really interesting debate with an old high school buddy recently. The dude owns a 69 Cougar rag-top, and it's a major looker: no surprise, it's his "baby".

He told me that he refuses to use a synthetic oil in that car, because the car wasn't built at a time that had them, it's not meant to run them. He argued that he believes a synthetic oil would actually be a detriment to run in the engine of his Cougar.

I've never heard this before, has anyone else? Does anyone know if he's right?
