2000 sunfire. auto trans. 2.2L

Sometimes under hard acceleration the engine seems to just keep revving up. Had it past 4000rpm and no gear shift occurred. have to lay off the accelerator so revs drop then another gear catches and can resume accelerating but not as hard.

doomed transmission the culprit here or just something about the car?

any info would be helpful.
