You can get into the low XXX range if you wait for sales at places like Macco. I know to get a better quality job from a local person cost around $1000 a few years back. Not sure what they would charge now.
If you do it yourself, prep is extremely important. Like Tuner said, a small mistake can turn into a big flaw. You really need the right equipment for doing that type of stuff.
Now I have seen people use spray paint to paint their cars. And I've also seen people Rhino their vehicles, Yes the spray in bed liner stuff. If you are ok with it, then go for it. Primer is a popular color for some areas around here. But then again, so is duck tape to hold things together.
