Default Peeling

The finish, I guess, on my Caravan is peeling. It's like a clear coating that comes off in sheets if you pull it just right. What IS that coating? Is it something I should peel off and replace, and if so, with what?

It sounds like the top coat of your paint job is peeling off and that is not good. I would definitely take it in to a paint shop and have it looked at.

You probably shouldn't peel it off yourself. It will look really bad. Get an estimate on a paint job. It may not be all that cheap, so don't mess with the paint until you can afford to have it done right. Otherwise, it will look really bad!

Oh no! I bet it's a protector of the paint so I'm thinking it should not be pulled off. I would call a body shop to see. You might get rust spots now. It might be an easy fix so call soon.

It sounds like an aftermarket application of a clear coat. And whoever did it, did not prepare the original paint surface properly before applying it. Take it in to a body shop so they can at least salvage the original paint job. Peeling it off is not a good idea.

Default My Caravan

One of my cars is a Dodge Caravan and I am sure it does not have a coating like this on it. We have one area where a friend's car rolled into ours and some of the paint is scratched off. Even there, no sign of a peeling is evident.

That peeling is definitely not a good sign. If it's peeling it's not adhering to the surface under it. But I'd also be concerned as to whether it's doing damage to your paint job.
