Default Rust around gas cap

My mom’s car is rusting out around the gas cap door. She always wipes off gas if it drips there too. How can she get that fixed? Will they just sand it out and repaint it right there? Is there anything we can do ourselves, so it is not so expensive?

It's not advisable to do this job yourselves unless you have experience with repairing rust and scratches on the bodywork. How much rust has developed will determine what the repair will need.

Consider rust to be like cancer. It spreads, and eats into your metal.

You need to take it all the way back to bare, clean metal-which like likely mean using a grinding machine. You then need to treat the metal, and a paint-get it done properly!

Wow, that sounds like a lot of work – Where can I get a grinding machine? I do have a grinder (or should say hubby does). I’m thinking this might not be a do-it-myself type of job. Makes me pretty mad because I wipe the gas off the car but I must have missed some. I’ve never had a vehicle rust around the gas cap before. It’s the only spot on the car too!
